How To Handle a Hurricane

Okay, so I've been hearing that a lot of people, especially in the New York area (in my school) don't know how to prepare or react to a hurricane. We've learned this past weekend that Hurricane Sandy is headed up the East Coast and could potentially cause some serious damage. For those of you who've never been in a hurricane, or if you just want to know what some of my tips are for coping with a hurricane, keep reading down below!

Tips on how to survive a hurricane:

  • Be calm
  • Have extra cases of water (2-36pks should be sufficient unless you live in a coastal area)
  • Canned fruits
  • Tuna/Chicken (can)
  • Peanut Butter
  • Bread or Tortillas
  • Cereal
  • Smoked Sausage/Hard Salami
  • Do all of your laundry ASAP
  • Be calm
  • Purchase batteries and flashlights/lanterns/candles/radio/lighters/matches
  • Charge all electronic devices (phones, computers, Ipods)
  • Fill your tank with gas and have extra gas on standby
  • Any and all daily medications/first aid
  • Mark your windows with duct tape (if you live near the coast, not the suburbs as much)
  • Keep an emergency bag with clothes and a list emergency numbers
  • Be calm

If you're wondering why I keep saying to be calm, it is because I have found in the five hurricanes and four tornadoes I've encountered, being calm is what makes things a lot better. If you hype everything up, the situation could either be ridiculous or not occur. Staying calm and collective will make everything easier and the transition (if any) smoother and you will be a lot safer.

I hope this helps and I wish you all the best if you're reading this and you have any type natural disaster coming your way.

xoxo
