On October 29th, much of
the East Coast experienced one of the most dangerous disasters in recent years,
Hurricane Sandy. Due to her powerful winds, many have lost their power, home,
and even lives. I know this is hard to digest, but even with her winds only
appearing as a Category 1 or 2, the damage done to New York City and the
surrounding areas is horrendous. I’ve been through my share of hurricanes and
in my opinion; this is only a fraction of what could have happened. Reason being
why the damage is so high is due to how the Northeast is positioned and its
components (towns, cities, mass transit), and everything is just a waiting game
as of now. I urge everyone who is reading this (if you are able to read this)
to please keep the Northeast and the East Coast in your thoughts and prayers.
There are many schools that are
off, and to students, this is a time to relax, hang-out, catch up on homework
(if my internet would stay active this would be me!), and make sure that their
families are okay. Having almost missed the last train from Grand Central up to
where I go to school, I am entirely grateful that I am with my friends here at
school and have power, food, etc… There are so many people in my area in
Brooklyn who are struggling with just power, and to think, that could have been
me with my family. I could have easily just stayed home, but I knew what would
have been better off at school, and I kept on traveling. With that being said,
please stay safe everyone and if you’re in an area that needs a little bit of
help, do the right thing because every little bit of time helps.
